This week marks our 26th week of taking cheap dates. If you haven’t read from the beginning of the year, our 52 Cheap Date Challenge, was something we started with great excitement. While the date side of things really took off, the blogging about the dates got lost….
When we last checked in, we were at Cheap Date #16.
Cheap Date #16: Drinks on the Patio. We realized that in our time living in south Florida, we never used our patio! Like, ever! It was just storage for the kids outdoor gear. This particular day, we both decided that we’d take our little bistro set (we don’t own patio furniture) outside with some candles and drinks after the kids went to sleep. The very slight change in location was just enough to make it seem date like without even having to put shoes on. (I did though. I didn’t want to step on a lizard or gecko or frog barefoot.) The candles were romantic and we had a great time!
Cheap Date #17: TBT: Clerks & Clerks 2 I was going to call it quits on the TBT movie theme- but it’s just too darn fun! Many of our choices for TBT movies were rentals–but these happened to be part of our Amazon Prime. Jay and Silent Bob. And a throwback to when we were both younger and much more irresponsible.
Cheap Date #18: The Fresh Market Dessert The Fresh Market is a grocery store chain that caters to folks with a certain foodie sensibility. It can be misleading in someways and pricey as well, but what they lack in organic produce and honey squeezed from gold, they make up for with delectable pastries and desserts. Yes. Other real amazing food choices (and wine selections!) can be made here. I seriously love this place and it’s both a blessing and curse to have one down the street from us. I popped in here to pick-up this yummy treat:
Yes. We had already eaten more than half of it before it occurred to us that we should capture it’s deliciousness on camera. It was the best $4.25 I’ve spent on a dessert. Ever.
Date #19: Drinks of the Patio: Because it was so fun the first time around. Because we were really pinching our pennies for our Disney trip. Because we really wanted to get out and be home at the same time. It was buggier this night….the citronella candles didn’t help a bit.
Date #20: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty Have you seen this movie? Have you?! It is such a fun, imaginative movie with a really positive message: Get out and live your life! Everyone can watch this movie. Seriously. Loved it.
Date #21: EPCOT We skated by the last few dates, trying to make them as cheap as possible because we knew that at the end of May, we’d be having a date “out” while we were at Walt Disney World Resort. We had some built-in babysitters (parents) who live near by the resort who came to take care of the three monsters while we went and tried to drink our way around the world. The plan didn’t go quite as we’d thought. We started in Canada…and I pretty much alternated beer, wine, beer, wine until we called it quits in The United States (about half way around). My favorite drink was the Hopageddon Imperial IPA from Napa Smith Brewery. This date cost around $75. The fact that we planned for this date far in advance helps keep our average spend per date down.
Date #22: Money Date With our trip under our belt, it was time to regroup and refocus. Time to plan for whatever is going to happen next. Consider the fall, the holiday’s, and planning for two more (minor, but no less celebratory) trips to Disney. Plus, all the other things a couple discusses when having a money date.
Date #23: Cooking Dinner & Van Morrison. We almost named our youngest son Van, after Van Morrison. Well. It was in the running. I wanted “Van”, but Michael wanted to name him Ivan, as that is his real name. (No one knows that Ivan is his real name!) We love to cook together and when we cook, Van has to be playing. It’s tradition from before kids. It’s a thing we do. This particular date took place after kids went to bed. We cooked and drank and talked and laughed…
Date #24: Facetime Double Date with Friends Our friends back in Chicago just had their 3rd baby boy. We haven’t seen them since the fall and made plans to Facetime one night. Funnily enough, we both forgot! Kids will do that to you! At the last minute, we were able to connect and had fun catching up, meeting the baby, and talking…. Great times with friends, and free!
Date #25: It Was Supposed to Be a Date Movie Night….but after 5 straight hot summer days split between beaches, pools, and parks, this wife and mom fell asleep on the shoulder of her husband. And he let her. Snuggle. Warm fuzzie. Taking care of each other is a great date, too. My game, my rules, I’m counting it. 🙂
This week is #26. The end of the month is going to be a “big” date, so the next few have to be of the “stay at home, super cheap variety”.
