The first place we discovered upon moving, Sunflower Creative Arts, hosted a free family event on Sunday. This event was all about free play– truly open ended play. It also involved construction and kids running around and an entire community devoted to inspiring creativity in children.
This particular day, families were invited to bring frozen items to contribute in the construction of an ice castle. It turned out to be this huge ring, made of tons of bricks of ice, delivered to a local park, unloaded from trucks by myself and fellow parents. The children added their ice creations to it, sprayed the ice with colored water, and added glitter. It was quite a sight. After- the kids played in it, around it, and with large cardboard boxes and “loose parts”, creating their own forts and games.
In preparing for the event, we discussed the changing states of water. We froze some items to take with us for the event. Stink checked on the items that were freezing periodically, watching them as they slowly froze. Just for fun, we also decided to put some water on the stove top to watch it turn from a liquid to a gas.
