The State of Florida requires all home schooled students to either take a test or submit a portfolio for review by a state certified teacher.
We chose the latter of the two. Ballplayer had his first annual evaluation by a teacher we hand-picked as being one who understood the unschooling process– not that this changed what she was looking for. I had to meet all the requirements as laid out by the law–no more, no less.
It was much easier than I thought it would be. This blog serves as my official document, but at times I used other methods to capture what I needed. It was a bit of a mad scramble to pull it all together– I hadn’t quite figured out how to make a system that worked for us. One that can allow for the flexibility that we have yet still seems cohesive enough to demonstrate the growth he had as a learner.
Tools that I’ve used to make a record of learning:
- my iPhone and select apps (Evernote has been amazing.)
- camera (a redundant tool, nevertheless important for this snap-happy mama)
August’s “Month in Review” is building quickly and I have some fun posts that are going to be posted soon enough.
Do you have a favorite tool to use for evaluation time?
